Namahage is a traditional event from the Oga region in Akita Prefecture. Dressed in fearsome costumes, the Namahage visit homes calling out, “Are there any bad children?” and are traditionally believed to bring good health and ensure the well-being of children. Their impressive appearance and powerful movements make them one of Japan’s iconic traditional performances. Registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, this is a rare opportunity to experience this unique cultural tradition in Niseko.
