Noboribetsu

Noboribetsu is famous for its hot springs, but this isn’t the only activity available here, Jigokudani- often called “Hell Valley” is a valley filled with still active volcanic vents; the boiling water running through it gives off a thick, sulfurous smell and is quite a sight at any time of the year. Noboribetsu is also home to the Date-Jidaimura theme park, recreating an Edo-period villiage complete with actors playing the parts of various villagers. On the scenic route to and from Noboribetsu, you’ll also be able to view Lake Toya.

Lake Toya

Lake Toya

The Lake Toya tour is not only scenic, but informative too. You’ll visit the Lake Toya visitor center and volcano museum. Afterward, you’ll visit Mt. Usu, which last erupted in 2000, causing widespread evacuations. You can also ride a cable car up Mt. Show Shin-zan, which first appeared in a farmer’s field in 1943 and now stands over 400m (and still growing), where you can view the active volcanic crater. On the way back you’ll stop at Lake Hill Farm, well known for its ice cream.

About a 5 hour trip (time will vary depending on road conditions).

You’ll also see several historical buildings such as the famous Tokeidai clock tower and the Old Hokkaido Government Building. No trip to Sapporo is complete without sampling the shopping available or a visit to the Sapporo Beer Museum.
